Yoga BenefitsDoing yoga is much more than merely stretching and putting the body into weird looking poses. The word "yoga" comes from the Sanskrit word yuj, and it denotes a union of two opposites. Many different types of yoga are described on original Indian texts. One of them is hatha yoga, which I teach in my classes. Hatha translates the union of sun (ha) and moon (tha) - the dual energies of yin and yang, hot and cold, masculine and feminine, motion and stillness etc. My classes are focused on gentle movements, breathing techniques and on strengthening and stretching the body, bringing balance and calmness in this crazy world around us. Finding peace and facing your true self is the ultimate goal.
We, Westerners have different ideas about yoga, and think it’s mainly about physical exercises combined with some breathing techniques. The truth is, it’s much more complex. As you practise, you may find that yoga becomes a way of life and you start to approach every aspect of your life with a balanced yoga mind-set. Yoga is for everyone, at every age. You don’t need to be flexible or have the perfect physique. You can hit the mat regardless of body size, background, gender, age, or how fit you are. All you need to have to practise yoga is the will to. So welcome to yoga, whether you are trying it out to feel fitter and more flexible, or to distress and energize your mind and body.
The continued practise of yoga brings medium and long-term rewards for the body and mind, and also yields a feel-good effect. The human body was designed to move freely. Practitioners often have the sense of standing taller and feeling freer, they are relaxed and happily at ease. Yoga is used as a pre-hab and re-hab activity helping people to deal with injuries, aches and pain, any problems that may occur in someone’s life. Yoga brings your body and mind into balance, improves your posture, releases tension in the body, strengthens and stretches the muscles, and teaches you how to listen to your body.
